Glasnevin Cemetery Museum offers exciting and engaging education programmes for students of all ages. The tours of the cemetery link closely with the primary and secondary history curricula and can be adapted to suit your students' needs. A school visit to Glasnevin Cemetery consists of a guided tour of the cemetery, a self guided visit to the museum, and an exciting education pack. Our aim is to capture the imagination and send your class away inspired!

Transition Year Tour Guiding Programme

Transition Year Tour Guiding Programme

Our one of a kind Transition Year Tour Guiding Programme is designed to give students an experience of the real life world of tour guiding. Students have the opportunity to develop skills in research and public speaking while building self-confidence.  

On the first visit : the students are given a demonstration by one of Glasnevin Cemetery Museum's tour guides on the tourism industry, the golden rules of customer service and the skills needed to research and deliver a tour.

On the second visit : the students step into the shoes of the tour guide and present to their class at the grave of a historical figure. A certificate is presented to all who complete the Tour Guiding Programme. 

This programme can be adapted for other groups on request.

Cost is €8, two visits inclusive. Complimentary admission for one leader per ten visiting students.  

Educational History Tour

Our renowned history tour gives students the opportunity to explore the diversity of Irish life since 1800, through the stories of the famous (and not so famous) people who are buried here.

  • Tours are tailored to the needs of your class - and some tours are available in Irish

WW1 Tour with Handling Session

WW1 Tour with Handling Session

Glasnevin Cemetery Museum also offers a First World War tour with handling session for primary and secondary school students. Following the First World War tour of the cemetery, students will have the opportunity to hold, comment on and ask questions about objects from the period 1914-1918.

TY Genealogy Workshop


Glasnevin Cemetery Museum offers TY students the opportunity to delve into family history and learn the skills of a genealogist.  Students will visit Glasnevin Museum where our resident genealogist will guide them through an on-site workshop. Using a range of methodologies including demonstrations, group-work and field-work, students will explore the main principles of genealogy and develop their research skills and knowledge. Teachers will receive a pack and lesson plans to aid the research process back in the classroom. Each student that completes the programme will receive a Certificate of Achievement.

Speechmaking Workshop

Speechmaking Workshop

Taking the oration given by Patrick Pearse at the funeral of Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa in August 1915 and drawing on the inspiration his words gave to those present at the graveside, Glasnevin Cemetery Museum is offering a speechmaking tour for students from 5th class to 2nd year.

Students will learn about the people buried at Glasnevin Cemetery who have had  a positive impact  on society through politics art, literature, music or engineering and present speeches on the ideals of  these historical figures during their visit to Glasnevin. This programme incorporates elements of the English and history curriculum.

Cost is €6.50 per student.

Geography Tour

Geography Tour

A geography tour is now available for primary school groups visiting the cemetery. This tour includes student activities and has been developed  using the SESE Geography Curriculum. Students will learn about the main rock types used in the headstones of the cemetery, weathering processes and the social geography of Glasnevin Cemetery.

Cost is €6.50 per student.




GPO and Glasnevin Cemetery Museum 


Looking to delve deeper into Ireland's history?

The GPO Museum is a highly interactive and immersive museum and links closely to both the primary and secondary school curricula. Explore the events of Easter week through personal stories, eyewitness accounts and historical artefacts.

Glasnevin Cemetery Museum is the largest cemetery in Ireland and the final resting place of many of the men and women who have shaped Irish history over the last two centuries. Our tour links with many of the narratives that students will explore in the GPO and a visit to the two sites is an experience that your students won't forget.

At Glasnevin Cemetery Museum students can relive the momentous events that helped to shape our nation.

Special re-enactments can be booked in addition to school tours. These include:

  • Patrick Pearse's graveside oration at Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa's funeral.     
  • James Larkin's famous speech in front of the gates at Mountjoy Prison.
  • Nurse Elizabeth O'Farrell's recollections of the surrender of the 1916 Easter Rising.
