1916: Rebellion, War and Commemoration in Ireland and beyond
28th January 2016 'From shoe box to window box, commemoration of the First World War in Ireland from 1919 to present day.' Tom Burke, Royal Dublin Fusiliers Association
In this paper, Burke will trace the commemoration of WW1 in Ireland from 1919 up to 2015. He will discuss the challenges it faced from inside and outside the commemorative movement, its birth, death and rebirth and contribution to the Irish peace process based on his own experience.
Bio: Tom Burke is founder of The Royal Dublin Fusiliers Association established in 1995. In August 2004, Tom was awarded an MBE for his contribution to the Irish Peace Process. He has contributed to several publications on Ireland and the First World War in journals such as The Irish Sword, Studies, Stand To, Dublin Historical Record, History Ireland, History Review, The Gallipolian and in Toward Commemoration: Ireland in War and Revolution 1912-1923 published by the Royal Irish Academy in 2013. He is a member of the First World War exhibition advisory committees to the National Museum of Ireland and National Library of Ireland. In 2010, Tom was an adviser to President McAleese on her visit to Gallipoli and President Higgins on his visit to Mons in 2014. Tom holds a B.Sc, a B.A. in English and History and an M.Litt. in Military History from University College Dublin.
All lectures start at 7pm and will be held in the Museum's Milestone Gallery, Glasnevin Cemetery. Dublin 11.
