Winter Lecture Series 2016

1916: Rebellion, War and Commemoration in Ireland and beyond

18th February 2016 "There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today": Re-evaluating the Battle of Jutland (1916) Ian Speller, Maynooth University

A key naval battle of the First World War, Jutland was fought by British and German navies during the months in which British authorities in Dublin attempted to deal with the aftermath of the Easter Rising. Debate over the performance of the commanders and the significance of this battle continues today, and this paper will explore the battle itself alongside its significance in the context of the war.

Bio: Ian Speller lectures at Maynooth University where he is the Director for the Centre of Military History and Strategic Studies. His primary area of interest is modern military history, naval history, maritime strategy and contemporary warfare.
