1916: Rebellion, War and Commemoration in Ireland and beyond

4th February 2016 '''They shall be speaking for ever': remembering the Abbey rebels.' Fearghal McGarry, Queen's University, Belfast

Based on his new book, The Abbey Rebels of Easter 1916: A Lost Revolution (Gill and Macmillan, 2015) McGarry will look at how the Abbey Theatre contributed to the politicisation of the revolutionary generation, the paper will explore the experiences, hopes and dreams of largely forgotten individuals that included Abbey employees who ranged from carpenters and usherettes, to actors and leading ladies, some of whom are buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.

Bio: Fearghal McGarry is a Reader in Modern Irish History at the School of History and Anthropology, Queen's University Belfast. He has published on Ireland and the Spanish Civil War, Eoin O'Duffy and multiple volumes relating to the 1916 Rising.

All lectures start at 7pm and will be held in the Museum's Milestone Gallery, Glasnevin Cemetery. Dublin 11.
