The funeral of O'Donovan Rossa, and Pádraig Pearse's graveside oration, was a pivotal event in the lead up to the 1916 Rising. The funeral organising committee encompassed all strains of political nationalism, as well as cultural nationalism, the labour movement, Cumann na mBan and others. The funeral brought together the seven signatories of the Irish Proclamation and many of those who went on to take part in the 1916 Rising were also present at the funeral.
