In memory of nationalist politician Charles Stewart Parnell

When Charles Stewart Parnell died on 6 October 1891, his funeral to Glasnevin was one of the largest seen in Ireland.  The 'Ivy Day' commemoration which commenced the following year has continued ever since and is one of the most enduring Irish commemorative events.

Dr  P.J. Mathews (UCD) Parnell and the Irish Revival

The death of Parnell in 1891 is often taken as the moment that marks the beginning of a new phase in Irish cultural history - the Irish Revival. This lecture will consider the long shadow cast by Parnell on the thinking and writing of the Revival period, with particular focus on the work of his fellow Wicklow-man, J.M. Synge. Dr Mathews' most recent publication is Handbook of the Irish Revival (2015), co-edited with Professor Declan Kiberd.
