History Ireland Hedge School
Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa: his life and after-life
Thursday 17th September at 7pm
Editor Tommy Graham will be hosting a series of History Ireland Hedge Schools, lively round-table discussions with historians and well-known personalities.
The event will begin at 7pm in the Museum's Prospect Gallery with the official launch of the O'Donovan Rossa Funeral Exhibition. (Light refreshments will be available from 6.45pm - 7pm)
In 1856 Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa began a revolutionary career that would span nearly 60 years when he founded the Phoenix Society, subsumed two years later into the Irish Republican Brotherhood. It ended with his funeral in Glasnevin Cemetery on 1st August 1915, where Patrick Pearse delivered his famous graveside oration. What was the significance of his career? Was he, in fact, more dangerous to the British dead than alive? To discuss these and related questions join History Ireland editor, Tommy Graham, for a lively discussion with the panel — Gabriel Doherty (UCC), Judith Campbell (Drew University, New Jersey), Conor McNamara (NUI Galway), Shane Kenna (Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa: unrepentant Fenian)
The event is free and no booking/tickets are required. We do, however, encourage people to come early in order to secure a seat (seats are limited and available on a first come first come first served basis)
